Universiti Malaya Invitational Championship 2003
(14th to 16th March 2003, Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya)

The above championship was held from 14th to 16th March 2003 in Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya. The tournament was carried out in the following 5 divisions:-

Division A - For participants aged 9 to 12 years old
Division B - For participants aged 13 and 14 years old
Division C - For participants aged 15 to 17 years old
Division D - For participants aged 18 years old and above (Open)
Division E - For university students (Inter-Varsity)

BTFC fielded a total of 27 players in Divisions A to D. Our club obtained 8 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals. Despite amassing a considerable number of gold medals, it was not sufficient for the team to be the overall champion. Warisan Taekwondo Academy went home with the Overall Champion's title with 11 gold medals.

Three of our regular players, Jason Chong, Sahril Ismail and Ryan Chong, did not participate this round. Jason and Ryan are preparing for the Dutch Open Championship at the end of March while Sahril is still recovering from his knee injury sustained in last year's National Inter-Club Championship. They assisted in coaching during the tournament.

This championship was a good exposure for our players in preparation for the approaching National Remaja Championship. The overall performances of our players were encouraging especially in the Division B. However, our weaker links from Division A and C were due to new and inexperienced players. One area of concern is that some of our experienced players in Division C failed to win their respective categories. Most of them are 15 years old and are the youngest in that division. This proves to be a disadvantage to our team and we will have to develop and strengthen their mindsets to overcome this problem.

On a lighter note, the co-operation and teamwork among the players and parents are worth commenting. I was impressed by the way everybody organized themselves to prepare the fighters. Every detail from food, cleanliness to coaching, warm up to cheering, was taken care of. This shows that everyone is learning from past experience and is improving along the way.

Although our team did not win any trophy this time, this is a blessing in disguise which has made everyone more determined to work hard to be the Overall Champion in the upcoming National Remaja Championship.
